My Personal Research Journey
The topic I chose to research is "How important is teaching preschoolers about culture diversity in the classroom.?" The reason I chose this topic is becasue a lot of preschool teachers does not include lessons or activities that reinterate culture in their classrooms. Many head start centers that I have observed in my community, do not incorporate an enviorment that provide diversity. Classrooms should provide diversity through instructions, activities, and displays, to teach children about other cultures standards of living. Does anyone have any suggestions about my topic, or any resource information that would helpful, if so please share the information with me. I am open for any suggestions.

Diane, this is a great topic to research. We are not fully educated yet on this subject even though diversity has been around for years. I look forward to reading your posts regarding the specifics of this subject.
ReplyDeleteHi! Diane,
ReplyDeleteI work for head start and I am shocked to hear that you have observed head start classrooms that do not provide a culturally diverse environment. Head Start is really strict on cultural diversity since the majority of their children are low income and come from diverse backgrounds. Rest assured that my classroom and even those in my area promote cultural diversity. I do believe it also comes to the demographics and make-up of the area that you are from as to what is taught in the classroom. Even still cultural diversity is something that all children should be introduced to because many of them do not see it in their homes. This is a great topic and best wishes in your research.

Diane,
ReplyDeleteYou are so right about having to teach diversity and culture differences to our young ones! The mobility of our society has increased tremendously in the last decade and I am sure it is only going to increase. Children need to be taught to be accepting of all cultures. This is not something they are born with, it is learned behavior!
Good Luck!
Tricia
Cultural and linguistic diversity is a very important concept to bring to the forefront. Currently, it is one of the most needed training topics in the ECE world and yet one of the least offered trainings. Head Start does have very strict requirements for cultural representation and if the program is being run correctly you should see cultural and linguistic diversity throughout their program. A great website that has lots of information is www.eclkc.ohs
