Sharing Web Resources

I received the newsletter from NAEYC for the October/November issue, and it was very interesing and informative to read the section about voices from practitioners through teacher research in Early Childhood Education. The article discussed gender identity in early childhood classroom during story dictation and dramatization.  I find the topic to be relevant in my current professional because of the cultural diversity issues we are faced with in the education system.  As an educator, it is important to explore issue that pertain to gender identity when working with young children.  The article talks about how children dramitize stories in the classroom, they tend to use gender sterotypes and segregate themselves by gender.  The article talks about the importance of not culturally dividing play domains into separate boy or girl games, because this type of social action create gender identity which may cause gender sterotyping.  I think this was an important topic of discussion, and contained informtion that I can use in the classroom setting.

  1. I bet it was a super interesting article. I think there is a lot to be said about gender identity, I often observe my students and see them stereotyping certain gender roles. I'll have to go and look for the article.

  2. The topic of gender is important to me as well. Watching children play is probably one of my favorite things to do as director. I see gender differences even from the infants. One thing to do try to do is open up the children with different opportunities. For example, I heard a preschool girl tell the boy "You can't play with the babies." I stepped in and assistanted play to include the boy into the babies. After guidance the children were a lot more acceptive of the gender difference. Its just amazing how children learn these differences so fast!!

  3. Diane,
This is an article that I would live to read myself. I also sit back and observe the children, especially when they break off into centers and go to the dramatic play area. They pretend to act out in different gender all the time and it is so funny just watching them.
