Favorite Book

A book I enjoy reading to my children is Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See.  The kids love for me to read this story because they can participate in many learning activities.  Children like to act out characters from the story, learn new colors, draw and color characters, and perform finger plays about brown bear.  This is a good book for children to learn many skills.

  1. Diane,
I like Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? too. Years ago when I was student teaching in kindergarten, my cooperating teacher, coincendently named Miss Brown, had the class use Brown Bear for a Reader's Theatre performance. The children loved it, as did their audience! I still have the outlines of the animals from the story. Each year, my kindergarteners retell this story in one way or another.

What do you think of the other stories Eric Carle has written that follow the same format? I think they are great. The repetitive text provides opportunity for emergent readers to be successful and to build their confidence, hopefully giving them encouragement to read even more.

  2. Diane-
I love Eric Carle for all the great books he has written for children. My class loves The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We just did Brown Bear last week and the children got to be the different characters. I made stick puppets for farmer in the dell and the children love playing out that song too. I agree the repetition of words/phrases encourage children to read because they can memorize them so easily. thanks Tammy
